VPS, cloud or managed hosting for business-critical systems?

Business-critical applications need predictable operation. VPS, cloud services and managed hosting differ mainly in how resources, responsibility, scaling and maintenance are organised.

Define operating requirements first

Operating hours, RTO (recovery time objective), RPO (recovery point objective), maintenance windows, dependencies and required monitoring need to be documented. Without these targets, the hosting choice remains a technical preference rather than a sound decision.

Internal capabilities count too: who responds to an alert, who installs updates and who is allowed to change production systems?

Separate technology from the responsibility model

VPS and cloud describe technical forms of provisioning; managed hosting mainly describes who is responsible for operation, maintenance and response. A dedicated VPS can cleanly separate projects, access and patch levels if this responsibility is consciously taken on or delegated.

Backups must be stored separately from the production system, and restoration must be tested regularly.

Assess cloud services by their dependencies

Cloud platforms offer flexible resources and many managed services. At the same time, dependencies arise on identity services, network components, regional availability and proprietary interfaces.

Before use, data flows, exit options, logging and responsibilities should be recorded. Scaling only helps if the application and data storage can handle it.

Record data location and responsibility

For business-critical systems, EU data location, GDPR requirements and, where applicable, data processing agreements should be checked and documented specifically. Managed hosting can clearly assign routine tasks and response times if the scope of services, access and escalation paths are described bindingly.

The operator is only responsible for the agreed operating services; the customer remains responsible for their functional requirements, data and approvals.
